Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to complete the Math Move Up option?

The amount of time it takes to complete the program varies with your starting point and focus.  The average time invested in the program by students who chose to participate last summer was 25 hours.  It may seem like a lot of time but this is a voluntary program and the time investment is totally worth it. It is a great refresher and it starts you on track in the curriculum. Some of the content will likely be easy at first. The program adjusts its content as you work problems. If you prove knowledge in an area, it moves ahead; if you struggle, it reviews and gives you more practice. Bonus! You are also practicing your self-discipline and planning as you work through the course on your own. You will need these skills in your academic career.

What about existing AP Scores or dual enrollment credit?

If you have AP scores for Calculus AB or BC of 3 or higher, you can use this in place of your Math SAT or Math ACT scores to determine your first math course. Similarly, if you have successfully taken community college courses in Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1, or a higher-level math, you can use your transfer credit to select your next level math course.

CAUTION:  Because math is a foundation for most of what is done in your major, we caution against jumping to Calculus 2 or 3 based on completion of your AP exam. Take time to evaluate if you believe you have a solid understanding and can apply the theory of Calculus or would you benefit from taking Calculus 1 again to build a more solid mathematical foundation.

NOTE:  We can only use AP and college transfer credit that appears on your UNC Charlotte records as confirmation of course completion. Therefore, make sure your transcripts are sent to the Admissions office before you arrive for SOAR.

What about AP scores and /or college credit that have not been posted yet?

If you have not yet received your AP scores and/or college transfer credits you can use the Math Move Up option as insurance to guarantee that you start in the appropriate math course for your major.

International Students

If you do not have Math SAT or Math ACT scores, it will be necessary for you to take a Math Placement testthrough the UNC Charlotte Math Department.

Can I use this program if I am not a College of Engineering major?

This program is administered by the Lee College of Engineering for College of Engineering students only. New freshmen can use the Move Up options to move up one math level to start on track in the curriculum. New transfer students are placed in their first math course based on transfer credits. However, transfer students are invited to participate in the Math Move Up program as an optional math refresher only. If your major is changed to a non-College of Engineering major before the start of the semester, your change in math level may be revoked.
